Skillet Apple Crisp topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream
This easy Skillet Apple Crisp starts on the stove with apples sauteéd in Bacon Up for extra flavor -- then is covered with a traditional oatmeal-brown sugar topping and finished in the oven. It's full of flavor and not overly sweet - a perfect dessert in the fall, or any time of the year!

Equipment

  • Cast-iron or other skillet that can go into the oven
  • medium mixing bowl

Ingredients

Filling

  • 6 medium apples cored and sliced (I used Granny Smith)
  • 3 Tbsp Bacon Up® bacon grease
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar packed
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp Kosher salt

Topping

  • 1-1/4 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 2 Tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 5 Tbsp unsalted butter softened
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/8 tsp Kosher salt
  • sprinkle ground cinnamon

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Ensure apples are washed, cored, and sliced (peeling optional)

For the Topping

  • In a medium bowl, mix softened butter, oatmeal, brown sugar, cinnamon, flour and salt. Small lumps of butter are okay throughout the mixture.

For the Filling

  • Place skillet over medium low heat and melt Bacon Up for the filling.
  • Once the Bacon Up is melted, stir in chopped apples and mix in brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Cook mixture down for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring continuously, until apples begin to soften.
  • Remove the pan from the heat, but keep the apple mixture in it. Spread the topping evenly over the apples and place into the oven at 350°F.
  • Bake for 35-40 minutes, until apples are tender and topping is crunchy.
  • Top with your favorite vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
