Bacon Up Joins the Healthy Fats Coalition Conversation in time to Celebrate National Healthy Fats Day on March 21, 2019
When you hear something often enough, you start to believe it. And if trusted experts and authorities, and even the government, tell you something for 50 years, it becomes the accepted truth. “Fats are bad;” “Saturated fat is the worst;” “Vegetable oils are better for you;” “Turn away from red meat, butter and animal fats to prevent heart disease.”
And now Bacon Up is suggesting that you should fry, cook, and bake with bacon grease? Isn’t that a recipe for disaster?!
Well, it turns out the incidence of heart disease did not decline, even as eating habits changed and “improved.” And some diseases – like Type 2 diabetes and dementia — have become even more prevalent over the same time span. In fact, now there are experts out there extolling the benefits of eating healthy fats in general, and animal fats specifically. (see “The Questionable Link Between Saturated Fat and Heart Disease: Are butter, cheese and steak really bad for you? The dubious science behind the anti-fat crusade” by Nina Teicholz in the May 6, 2014 edition of The Wall Street Journal)
So what gives?
We here at Bacon Up are not nutritionists, dietitians, or food scientists. But we’ve read enough articles referencing substantial, large-scale, peer-reviewed studies to understand that the science is far from settled on this topic. And, from our perspective, the critics of the science behind the low-fat diet recommendations make a very compelling case that animal fats are not the problem, and may actually be part of the solution. Going forward, we’ve decided to share with you some of the interesting and well-documented research that we find – and then you can decide for yourself what’s best for you and your family.
As a matter of fact, we’ve decided to join the Healthy Fats Coalition – just in time for National Healthy Fats Day (March 21) – because we support their “educational initiative dedicated to the proposition that healthy fats should be included as an essential part of the American diet.” This group of nutritionists, authors, food producers, farmers, chefs, non-profits, and healthy lifestyle advocates are committed to “creating an enlightened conversation about the food we eat.” We agree with their core premise that “animal fats are not as problematic as they once were thought to be, they have tangible health benefits, and their artificial/manufactured substitutes are far worse than originally thought.”
At a minimum, we objectively know the following about Bacon Up, and we subjectively believe these facts are important and beneficial. Plus, when you FRY, COOK, & BAKE with Bacon Up, it’s delicious! Give it a try and see if you agree.
