Can I use Bacon Up in sweet recipes?
Bacon Up can replace some or all of the shortening, vegetable oil, margarine or butter in a variety of sweet recipes. Most people agree that adding Bacon Up does not make baked goods taste like bacon, but rather adds a rich complexity that we often refer to as “next-level” flavor. With baked goods each recipe is a little different, but a general starting point would be to replace HALF of the butter or shortening called for with Bacon Up.

How much Bacon Up should I use?
For deep-frying, pan-frying, and general sautéing, the conversion rate for Bacon Up and traditional cooking oil, butter or shortening is 1 to 1. So, if a recipe calls for a ½ cup of butter, use ½ cup of Bacon Up. One tablespoon of olive oil? Use one tablespoon of Bacon Up.
For baked goods, our rule of thumb is to use Bacon Up as a substitute for 1/2 the shortening or butter called for in the recipe. So far in our baking that has been a safe starting point, but you can experiment with variations and see what you like best. (And then let us know! We’d love to share what you think with the whole Bacon Up family!)
